Story
Joseph Abdy came to Queensland in about 1901 and started business as a general storekeeper in Woodford until 1909 when he and his family returned to Brisbane. Starting in about 1928, his sons, Herbert, Robert and Michael operated Abdy Bros. drapery stores in Brisbane, Gympie and Maryborough, for several decades. The Brisbane store was at the corner of George and Ann Streets. In 1935, they opened a second Brisbane store at Wooloongabba. One of their advertising slogans was ‘You can buy it cheaper at Abdy Bros.’ indicating their intention was to be a ‘bargain’ store.
