Business: Malouf’s Fashion House

Story

Initially working with his father, James (Jim), in Brisbane, Cecil Malouf later ran the Cashman’s store in Bundaberg. He returned to Brisbane and tried other businesses, including a laundromat, but in 1976 went back into drapery. Cecil and his wife, Valda, both worked at their Woolloongabba store: ‘Mum looked after women’s fashion on one side and dad had the drapery on the other’. After 10 years, competition from shopping centres and the increased traffic at Woolloongabba contributed to their decision to close the business and retire.
