Story

When, in 1897, the Coolgardie Miner listed the names of some of the non-European storekeepers within a hundred yards of the Victoria Bridge, Brisbane to illustrate the threat they posed to ‘Australia for the white man’, Calil Alouf was on the list. Calil was indeed, one of the early Syrian storekeepers in South Brisbane and his wife worked as a hawker. Their third child, Mary, was born in June 1894 so the couple had lived in Brisbane for at least six years when Calil died in January 1900 aged forty-three. He was survived by his wife, Rosie (nee Farah) and four children aged between two and fourteen. The family lived in Melbourne Street, South Brisbane. It was perhaps fortunate for the widowed mother of four that her brother, Assad Farah, lived close-by in Stanley Street.
